Higher Cut Resistance Isn't Always Better
When choosing cut-resistant safety gloves, it's easy to assume that a higher cut rating automatically means a better glove.
But industrial hand protection isn't that simple.
Under the ANSI/ISEA 105 classification system, cut-resistant gloves are rated from A1 through A9, with higher ratings representing greater resistance to cutting forces under standardized testing.
But the highest rating isn't necessarily the right choice for every application.
Start With the Actual Hazard
Effective PPE selection begins with understanding the job.
Workers handling glass, sheet metal, sharp components, blades, or fabricated parts can face very different hazards. Safety teams should consider more than cut resistance, including:
- Puncture and abrasion resistance
- Impact protection
- Grip
- Dexterity
- Comfort and fit
- Glove durability
A glove should provide protection appropriate for the hazard without unnecessarily sacrificing the worker's ability to perform the task.
Comfort Matters
Workers may wear their gloves for an entire shift. If PPE is uncomfortable, restrictive, or makes the job difficult, consistent use can become a challenge.
That's why worker feedback and real-world wear trials should be an important part of PPE selection.
Testing gloves in the actual work environment can help evaluate protection, comfort, grip, dexterity, and durability.
Look Beyond Price Per Pair
The cheapest glove isn't always the lowest-cost solution.
A more durable glove that requires fewer replacements may ultimately provide a lower cost per use while improving worker protection and productivity.
